O, For a Dark Night Sky

by David J. Kaplan

The city’s night sky
Holds the moon aloft,
A dim orb.

The drinking gourd dismantled
Cassiopeia banished.
Orion dismembered.

O, for a dark night sky,
Stars shimmering
In both mind and eye.

When meteors from heaven sent,
Toward Earth their voyage bent
With an arc as wide
As a child’s smile.
